Essential Items Needed For Student Accommodation

No one expects student accommodations to win any awards for interior design, but there are certain essentials that any student will need when going to live in student accommodation. Before spending a lot of money on these essentials, check to see if your accommodation provides any of these items so that you can save your money for other things. If not, give yourself plenty of time to shop for your essentials so that you don't find yourself stressed out and grabbing the first thing you see.

Furniture

Most student accommodations will come furnished with a basic amount of furniture. Beds, bookshelves, desks, chairs, couches and even kitchen or dining room tables are generally furnished for students, but if not then these are probably the biggest ticket items that a student will need to purchase. Bedside lockers, study lamps, baskets and storage options may not be supplied, but students will likely find these helpful in making their accommodation more comfortable.

Personal Accessories

Of course students like to personalise their accommodation, so a certain amount of personal accessories or ornaments should be brought to any new home. Photos of friends and relatives, knick-knacks that hold memories, perhaps a favourite old toy or doll, and any other decorative item that have special meaning to a student should all have a place in their accommodation. However, students may want to consider keeping these specific items in their own private rooms in order to minimise the risk that others may hurt them.

Electronics

Modern life is full of electronics and students in particular often find an assortment of electronic items useful to their daily schedules. From alarm clocks to microwaves, a variety of electronics are useful in the home and may in fact be supplied in student accommodations. Personal electronics, including mobile phones and mp3 players, will be the responsibility of the students themselves and should generally be kept safely in the student's room. Laptops should also be kept safe and private, and with password protection if a student is concerned about the safety of his or her files. Larger electronic items, such as televisions, DVD players and games consoles, may be provided for students or it may be up to students to purchase these items. If students must supply their own, going in on a purchase together is one way to lower the cost per student however it should be agreed early on what will happen to these items when the students no longer live together.

Kitchen Essentials

With the larger items out of the way many students forget that they may also need to outfit their kitchens. A selection of glasses, mugs, dishes, crockery and utensils are the basics of any kitchen, but pots and pans, baking trays and electronic kitchen appliances such as mixers and blenders may also be needed. If a dishwasher is not available in the student accommodation then a good supply of washing up liquid and a draining board will also be needed.

The definition of an "essential item" for a student accommodation will likely differ according to each student, but there are some things that students will find hard to live without. Furniture, personal accessories, electronics and kitchen essentials are just a few of the basic items most students need in order to live comfortably in student accommodation.
